Abstract (English):
The article is devoted to the concepts of punishment in the history of criminal law. The classification of theories that became most widespread in the 19th–20th centuries in Russian criminal law is used. At the same time, attention is drawn to the fact that modern punishment paradigms do not fully use the experience of the past.
