The article examines the historical aspects of the content of the phenomenon of the convict community of places of deprivation of liberty in Russia of the XIX – early XX century, gives a psychological and criminological characteristic of its leaders belonging to the category of professional criminals - "vagabonds". The author concluded that the leaders of the convict community of the XIX – early XX century. they were the prototype of modern "thieves in law".
